One of the essential functions of coaches and team managers is to manage team communications with players and their families. If you are a coach or team manager, SportsEngine has created a Team Management Guide for Coaches and Team Managers to help you use our website and mobile app to efficiently and effectively communicate and manage your teams.
Brookline will again host a Coaches Clinic to share tips and tricks on running successful practice sessions. This clinic can be useful for coaches of all levels of experience.
Join us on 03/29/2020 at Chatham Upper from 11:00AM - 12:30PM.
Brookline is implementing a new process in 2019 to ensure that all of our coaches and volunteers have background check documents on file with the league and have completed the online training in child abuse prevention that is now required by Federal Law (i.e., the Safe Sport Act that was signed into law earlier this year). All Brookline coaches and volunteers will be required to register on our website; the registration link is here. "Coach Registration" is free, however you will be required to upload the following documents:
• A Pennsylvania Criminal Background Check dated no earlier than July 1, 2016
• A Pennsylvania Child Abuse History Certification dated no earlier than July 1, 2016
• Certificate(s) of completion of the SafeSport online training program for child abuse prevention
No adult will be allowed to participate in Brookline activities with children in 2019 until they have registered with the documents above. We are requiring this registration of ALL coaches, including those who have sent us background check documents in the past, because of the new training requirement and to ensure that we have complete and up-to-date documents on all volunteers.
These 3 documents can be obtained as follows:
1) PA criminal background check is free for “volunteers working with children” and can be obtained online here. Be sure to select the "Volunteers only" new record check option.
2) PA Child Abuse History Certification can be obtained online here. You will be required to create an “individual login.” Please note that these certifications can be obtained for free every 5 years. If your most recent certification is dated before July 1, 2016 but after March 1, 2014, you will be charged $13 on the state’s website for a new certification.
3) SafeSport training involves completion of three online training modules that take approximately 90 minutes in total. There are 4 options to obtain this training (all but the first option are free).
A) Go to www.safesport.org and register as an “unaffiliated” individual. Then complete the 3 Safesport training modules (total cost $20). Save the “SafeSport Trained” program completion certificate.
B) Go to USA Baseball’s Sport Development website http://www.sportdev.org/Courses, click “Sign In” and create a new account with USA Baseball, then search for word “SafeSport” in their online catalog and complete all 3 SafeSport modules, saving the completion certificate from each module. (Cost is free.)
C) Go to USA Softball’s registration website https://registerusasoftball.com/ and create a new account with USA Softball, noting the member number you will be provided. Then go to the www.safesport.org site and register for SafeSport, indicating your USA Softball affiliation by entering your member number, and proceed to complete the 3 SafeSport training modules (cost is free). You will then be able to download the “SafeSport Trained” program completion certificate.
D) If you are affiliated with another sports organization with a national sport governing body (such as basketball, ice hockey, soccer, gymnastics, lacrosse, swimming, field hockey, etc.) the SafeSport training requirements are the same as for baseball/softball, and you may be able to obtain free SafeSport training through those sports organizations’ websites.
Thank you in advance for your efforts to ensure that Brookline provides a safe environment for the nearly 900 children who play in our league, and for ensuring that Brookline maintains the highest standards for training and certification of our adult volunteers.
Questions about the new certification and training requirements can be directed to:
Chris Bobbitt, Safety Officer and Director of Operations
Pete Groeneveld, Director of Player Personnel
We now require all coaches (including assistants) to be registered with your background check documents and child safety training certificates. NOTE: the training requirement is new for 2019. No adult is allowed to participate in Brookline practices or games without being registered. Click here for more information on Coach Registration.
